Cows on the plains in summer, Pohorje delicacies all year round.

We are farmers from below Rogla. From June to September our cattle graze the open plains of Pohorje, and in the Pohorje Delicacies Hut we sell what local farms and makers produce.

About us

The Rogla Grazing Community (Pašna skupnost Rogla) was founded in 2015. It brings together farms from around Zreče that graze their cattle together every summer on the grassy ridges around Rogla, mainly on Ostruščica.

The Pohorje plains, known locally as planje, were shaped over centuries by people and livestock. Until 1986 cattle grazed in the forest at Rogla and the plains were mown for hay. Today grazing keeps these open meadows from turning back into forest. They are also home to the rare cranberry blue butterfly, which in Slovenia lives only on the Pohorje plains.

Much of our pasture is a ski slope in winter. When the snow melts, the skiers make way for the cows.

The grazing season

We bring the cattle up to the plains in June, once the grass has grown, and take them back down to the valley in mid-September. In between, cows and calves graze freely on fenced pastures around Rogla. The farmers visit them regularly, count them and look after the fences and water.

On the pasture

Our cows are calm, but they are large animals and protective of their calves. Please follow a few simple rules.

  1. Keep your dog on a lead.Cows defend their calves against dogs. If a cow charges, let go of the lead so your dog can get away on its own.
  2. Do not feed or pet the animals.Keep plastic bags out of sight too, as cows expect to find salt in them.
  3. Never walk between a cow and her calf.Go around the herd in a wide arc.
  4. Close gates behind you.Leave gates and passages as you found them.
  5. Stay on marked paths. This protects the grass the cattle feed on.
  6. Stay calm.If an animal comes close, do not turn your back on it and move away slowly.
  7. Take your litter home.Plastic and string are dangerous for livestock.
